St Michael Tower
Oxford's Oldest Building
St Michael at the North Gate, located on Cornmarket Street, is Oxford's oldest building, featuring a Saxon tower built around 1040.
The church played a significant role in history, notably housing the Oxford Martyrs - Bishops Latimer, Ridley, and Archbishop Cranmer - in the Bocardo Prison before their execution in 1555 and 1556; the prison door is displayed in the tower.
Visitors can climb the 97 steps of the tower for panoramic city views and explore artifacts like the 14th-century font and the pulpit where John Wesley preached in 1726
